About the OFTC

The Optical Fibre Technology Centre is an interdisiplinary research department of the University of Sydney. OFTC carries out both academic and commercial research over a wide range of optical fibre and photonic devices.

OFTC is one of the few centres in the world with state of the art facilities for fabricating speciality optical fibre and components where fibres and fibre devices can be designed and made to custom specifications. OFTC provides opportunities for a large number of students, and collaborates with groups around the world in areas as diverse as astronomy, telecommunications, and medicine.

Professor Neil Weste, Founder NHEW R+D Pty Ltd

After a career in integrated circuit design in the US , Neil returned to Australia as Professor of Microelectronic Systems, Macquarie University. With David Skellern he founded Radiata Communications which pioneered CMOS chip-sets for the IEEE 802.11a standard. Radiata was later acquired by Cisco Systems. Since then Neil has invested in several emerging technology research projects and technology businesses. Neil is Chairman of the AusIndustry Commercial Ready IT&T Committee and a member of the IR&D Board. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and co-author of a popular text on CMOS IC design (3rd edition, 2004) that has remained the leading undergraduate text in this area for over 20 years.
